The essential role of Nitrogen

Nitrogen is an essential nutrient for plant growth, development and reproduction. Despite nitrogen being one of the most abundant elements on earth, nitrogen deficiency is probably the most common nutritional problem affecting plants worldwide – nitrogen from the atmosphere and earth’s crust is not directly available to plants.

Plants typically contain 3 to 4 per cent nitrogen in their above-ground tissues. In comparison to other nutrients, nitrogen is much higher in concentration. The only other nutrients present in higher concentrations are carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen, which don’t play a major role in soil fertility management programs.

In plants, nitrogen is essential because it is one of the main components of chlorophyll, a compound that converts sunlight energy into sugar by combining oxygen and water (photosynthesis). Also, it is an imperative component of amino acids, which are the building blocks of proteins.

Plants cannot exist without proteins. Among other things, nitrogen contributes to the synthesis of energy-transfer compounds, including ATP (adenosine triphosphate). Adenosine triphosphate enables cells to conserve and utilise the energy released during metabolism.

Nucleic acids like DNA contain nitrogen, which is essential to the growth and reproduction of cells (and eventually whole plants). Life as we know it would not exist without nitrogen.

Crops require nitrogen to produce optimal yields. As an essential amino acid in protein, it contributes directly to plant protein content.

GroMate is made up of 2.7% Nitrogen as Ammonium as this is one form of Nitrogen that plants can readily use. Ammonium is commonly found in the soil, which is created naturally by the nitrogen cycle or introduced through GroMate and deposited into the soil for plants to use.

The GroMate formulation also uses 2.3% Urea, which contains 46% nitrogen promoting vigorous plant growth and high crop yields.

The essential role of Phosphorus in plants

In plants, phosphorus is important both as a constituent of several key compounds, as well as a catalyst in numerous biochemical reactions. One of the most important functions of phosphorus is converting the sun’s energy into plant compounds.

All living things contain phosphorus in their DNA, the genetic “memory unit”. As a component of RNA, it is also vital for the formation of proteins and other compounds that are essential for plant growth, seed development, and genetic transfer. Both DNA and RNA contain phosphorus bonds that link their structures together.

Phosphorus is an integral part of ATP, the “energy unit” of plants. Photosynthesis generates ATP, which contains phosphorus in its structure, which affects growth of seedlings, grain formation, and maturity.

Plants need phosphorus to have healthy and vigorous growth. Specific growth factors attributed to phosphorus include:

  • Stimulated root development
  • Stronger stalks and stems
  • Increased flower formation and seed production
  • Improved uniformity and earlier crop maturity
  • Improved nitrogen fixation capacity for legumes
  • Improving crop quality
  • Increased plant disease resistance
  • Supports plant growth and development throughout its life cycle

Why Potassium is the key to your crops nutrition

GroMate provides slow-release potassium directly to your crop’s soil to ensure your plant can perform various chemical reactions, including photosynthesis, protein and starch synthesis.

  1. Photosynthesis
When K is deficient, using sunlight to synthesize foods from carbon dioxide and water, declines and respiration increases. This combination lowers the plant’s carbohydrate supply and overall crop health.
  2. Protein synthesis
Potassium assists in the process of bringing material to and from the areas where protein molecules are created. For example, K helps with nitrate uptake by the plant’s roots and brings it to these areas to be turned into protein. Plants need protein to fight off diseases and for protection from harmful chemicals.
  3. Starch synthesis
Potassium activates the enzyme responsible for this process, in addition to many other growth enzymes. This process allows plants to produce grains rich in starch.

We can help you maintain your plants’ structure (through turgor pressure) and reduce wilting with GroMate.

Without Potassium, these processes cannot fully and efficiently take place within the plant, which can impact the health of the plant, leading to lower yield.

The function of Organic Solids

With 15% Organic derived from Fish, Humates, Seaweed & sugar GroMate can provide your plants with important nutrients and enhance microbial activity in your soil.

The importance of Zinc when applying Phosphorus

The interaction of Phosphorus and Zinc has been well researched and documented in the fields of soil chemistry and plant nutrition.

Research shows that high rates of Phosphorus fertiliser without adequate plant-available Zinc can reduce Zinc uptake by the roots, induce Zinc deficiency, and decrease plant growth and yield (Marschner, 2012).

GroMate ensures complimentary rates for your application of Zinc containing Phosphorus to successfully reduce or eliminate the Zinc deficiency and realise a greater response to applied Phosphorus.
