Function
Calcium is an essential plant nutrient and plays a key role in plant metabolism. It is required for various structural roles in the cell wall and membranes, and a countercation for inorganic and organic anions in the vacuole. Plant metabolism relies on cytosolic (fluid found inside cells) Ca2+ concentration is an essential intracellular messenger coordinating responses to numerous developmental cues and environmental challenges.
Magnesium is the central atom in chlorophyll structure and as such is critical in crop production. Often deficient in light sandy or red soil it is a vital additive in many orchards and small crop areas in Australia. Magnesium is needed for the transport of the metabolism of phosphorous. High applications of K-based fertilizer may induce Magnesium shortages in soils without a good background in Magnesium.
