Northern NSW battles floods

Tuesday, January 08, 2008

Wild weather continues to hit New South Wales, with some parts of the north coast witnessing their worst flooding in more than 50 years.

News South Wales Premier Premier Morris Iemma is visiting flood-affected areas today and says the damage bill will top $20 million.

Many roads on the north coast remain cut by floodwaters, and hundreds of people have either been removed from their homes, or left stranded.

Weekend flooding in the town of Kyogle was the second highest on record, with many areas still cut off.

Mayor Ernie Bennett says cleaning up will be an enormous and expensive task.

He says it is too early to estimate the number of livestock washed away, but says he knows of one landholder with 70 cattle missing.
