Climate centre predicts a wetter than average year
Monday, July 02, 2007
There is some good news for those east of the Great Divide - signs are improving for a La Nina weather event.
Despite an earlier report from the National Climate Centre saying the chances of a La Nina had stalled, the centre now says the latest international computer models point to a wetter than average finish to the year.
Climatologist Blair Trewin says strong trade winds and cooler ocean temperatures are pointing towards a La Nina although the current rainfall is not related.
"The influence is actually strongest through inland eastern Australia, although it does have some effect on rainfall through most of east and northern Australia but it's really areas like New South Wales west of the divide and inland Queensland where La Nina's tend to have the strongest impact," he said.
